From Cubicle to Cancun: How Travel Influencers Say Goodbye to the 9-5 and Hello to Paradise – All While Earning Big!

First of all, what is an influencer?

An influencer, also known as a content creator, is someone who posts content on social media about their daily lives.

They have a following of people who support them and stay updated from their daily videos. The followers of influencers follow them because they are entertained, inspired, or invested in their lives, therefore growing a sense of trust in the influencer.

Thanks to the trust that they have earned from their social media when an influencer posts a product or service that they use and love, there is often a spike in sales from the people who follow them.

How do they get their start?

Like any job, you have to start at the bottom. Growing a following takes time and you have to earn your followers and the trust they have in you. Most influencers have been posting consistently for years, starting from 0 followers.

When starting to grow a following, you have to start by staying consistent and posting multiple times a day, creating engaging content that will inspire, inform, and entertain your audience. Influencers also have to choose a niche that they want to create content around. You should have a broad niche, such as travel, and a more specific niche inside of this, such as “luxury tropical destinations”, “budget backpackers”, or “long-term family travel”. Growing a social media page based around this more specific niche will help to gain followers who care about your specific lifestyle.

How do they earn income?

So travel content creators may have a lot of followers on social media, but how do they earn money from this? 9-5’s are a thing of the past, people can work remotely and have side hustles or main hustles. Some of the most prominent ways that travel influencers earn money are brand deals, the creator fund, and group trips.

Since the influencer has a following of people who support them, when they love a product or service, their followers are inspired to try the product or service as well. Companies will hire influencers to post about their brand on their social media. In the travel niche, common brands that are promoted include hotels and excursions. Smaller influencers will often start out sharing products or services in exchange for being able to receive a hotel stay or join an excursion for free but those with a larger following can earn thousands of dollars for their content.

The creator fund is where you are paid directly from TikTok or YouTube. The platform pays a small amount of money for each view that the video receives. When videos go viral, receiving millions of views, this adds up!

Group trips are becoming very popular in the travel content creator world. This is where a company that sells group trips will hire an influencer to “host” the trip. People who follow the influencer will book a spot in order to be able to experience traveling with the person they have grown to love through their videos. The influencer hosting the trip earns commission through each person who books as well as gets to join the trip at no expense.

Who are successful influencers?

To fully understand travel content creators, it is best to check out their pages for yourself!

A successful influencer in the “budget backpacker” niche is @yogirl_rin on TikTok. Rin does work exchanges around the world and posts her experiences online. She has grown a connection with her followers, inspiring many people to experience solo travel for the first time!

An example of a “family travel” page is @thebucketlistfamily on Instagram. This family with 2 young kids goes on adventurous travels all around the world sharing their experience of the highs and lows of living this lifestyle with young children.

Global Warming Could Ruin Your Summer Vacation. Here’s How You Can Save It!

Over the last year, global warming has been the star of the show, causing temperatures to skyrocket and set new world records. The entire world has been experiencing hotter-than-normal temperatures, making a mild summer turn scorching in a matter of weeks.

If you live in a hot area, you might want a vacation that will cool you off during summer.  Many are traveling to destinations with colder temperatures, which are referred to as coolcations. These creative getaways are designed to help you chill out during a sweltering heat wave. Here’s where you should travel this summer and fall to escape the heat.

Iceland

It is no surprise that Iceland has made our summer coolcations list since it has ice right in the name. Iceland is not frigid cold all year; in fact, summers are mild and beautiful. In July, which is the heart of summer, you can expect an average temperature of 10°C to 15°C or 50°F to 59°F.

The mild temperatures make marveling at waterfalls and hiking to black sand beaches much more enjoyable. You can even soak in one of Iceland’s many hot springs during the Midnight Sun, which takes place every June. Summer is a fantastic time to drive Ring Road, one of the best road trips in the world. It takes five to seven days in summer since the route will be snow-free.

Scotland

Jetset over to the United Kingdom to enjoy the breathtaking land of Scotland. Scotland is a perfect destination for a summer coolcation since its July temperatures are about 10°C to 20 °C or 50 °F to 68 °F.Spend your day admiring castles such as Stirling Castle and Urquhart Castle before hiking in the Scottish Highlands, which includes the infamous Isle of Skye’s Cuillin Mountains. If you are feeling adventurous, you can enjoy the mild temperatures on a boat tour of Loch Ness, where you can search for the iconic Loch Ness Monster.

Alaska

Alaska is known for being one of the snowiest and coldest places in the United States, but in summer, it shines. The average temperature in July is 15°C to 25°C, or 59°F to 77°F. Marvel at the mountains in Denali National Park, or take a scenic cruise to the massive Hubbard Glacier. If you love water sports, spend your coolcation kayaking the Prince William Sound or the Inside Passage without overheating. Alaska has so much to offer for a thrilling and scenic summer coolcation!

Switzerland

If you have ever wanted to visit the Swiss Alps, go in the fall. After a sunny summer, the country will still be free of snow, and the temperatures will start to cool down. You will travel there a few months before the tourist ski season, lowering the prices of accommodations. The average temperature in October is 5°C to 15°C or 41°F to 59°F, depending on your elevation. Visit Interlaken, where you can take a train to Jungfrau, also known as the “Top Of Europe,” before enjoying Swiss Fondue at one of the charming mountain restaurants. The temperature will be comfortable enough for a boat tour around Lake Geneva or to admire the massive Rhine Falls near Zurich.

Portugal

During the Fall, Lisbon’s temperatures range from 16°C to 23°C or 61°F to 73°F, which is perfect for exploring the São Jorge Castle and Belém Tower in Portugal. On an outdoor terrace, spend your evening devouring authentic Portuguese food, such as fresh seafood like Bacalhau, local cheese, and grilled meats. Portugal is also home to some of the world’s most delicious wine! Take a day trip to the Douro Valley, one of the world’s oldest wine regions, where you can sip wine in lush vineyards while enjoying the views.

The Greek Islands

Many travel to Greece in the summer to sunbathe on the scenic beaches of its many different islands. Fall is one of the best times to visit islands such as Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete. Not only will you be able to enjoy the off-season rates, but the weather is lovely during this time.

The average temperature of Santorini in October is between 17°C to 23°C or 63°F to 73°F. This is the perfect temperature for walking around the hilly city without being drenched in sweat when you reach your suite. You can also take ferries to island hop while enjoying the light breeze of the Aegean Sea.

When you are ready to escape during the next summer heat wave, you can easily choose one of these fabulous destinations for your coolcation. That way, you can chill out while having the time of your life!

Guiding Your Parent’s Solo Flight: 10 Tips for Ensuring Their Safety

My 74-year-old mom was in the Philippines and she wanted to visit me in San Francisco. I considered going to the Philippines to pick her up but that was too expensive and she seemed confident enough to travel on her own but I was so nervous for her.

You see, she had never experienced traveling alone and at 74 years old, she’s forgetful, gets distracted, confused, and English is her second language.

But we came up with a plan so it wouldn’t be a confusing and stressful experience for both of us. Here’s what worked for:

1. Talk. Talk. Talk

The first step is to have an honest conversation with them about the flight. See what concerns they have and if they have any questions. This can help to put their mind at ease for a less anxious experience.

2. Request Wheelchair Service.

The moment I purchased her tickets, I requested a wheelchair service. I let them know my mom was an elderly woman who needed help getting from the ticket counter to the plane. Organize any services your parent may need before you get to the airport. This includes the likes of wheelchair assistance, priority boarding, and onboard services. Make sure you don’t leave this to the last minute as the services may be unavailable for increased fees.

3. Pack with Them

Since I was not with her, I made sure to Facetime her. You should pack with them to not only ensure they are taking everything they need but also comply with TSA/airline guidelines. If they are checking in luggage, look at allowed weight limits and fees. Create a checklist, and then you’ll be able to tick it off as you go along.

4. Check Them In

I was on the phone with her when she checked in. Yes, I’m a helicopter kid! Many airlines now allow you to check in online. Doing this for them not only removes a step in the process but allows them to move through the airport more quickly. This means less time on their feet and more time resting. Talk them through this process so they don’t end up queuing unnecessarily at the airport.

5. Prepare Documents with Backups

If your parent needs paperwork like a boarding pass, hotel booking, or airport transfer, prepare this for them and print off copies. When traveling, it’s always best to have two copies. Give them one to keep on their person and put another set in their luggage.

6. Create a Cheat Sheet

A cheat sheet is a concise set of notes that someone can refer back to. On this you can put any bits of information they may need. Flight details, emergency contacts, transportation info, security tips, and flight etiquette are all good examples. You should also add your name, number, and address in case you need to be contacted or something happens to their phone.

7. Create a Travel Plan

Create a travel plan from the moment they leave their door to the moment they arrive at the end destination. This includes any car journeys, layovers, or public transport. Get them to memorize it and read it back to you so they are comfortable with the plan.

8. Provide Emotional Support

Traveling can be difficult, and their pride may be hurt by needing assistance. Remind them you’re there to make life easier and you’re available for any support or questions. If nervous, you can also give them some relaxation tips for coping with the anxiety of a flight.

9. Track and Follow Up

You can get all the information for a flight online or via an app, and track its progress. You can call your parent as they are getting on the plane, then again after it lands. This also provides emotional support but also allows you to guide them on their next steps, such as baggage claim and transportation.

10. Be Early At The Gate

When your parent’s plane lands make sure to be early or at least on time.I arrived at my mom’s gate 30 minutes before her plane landed because I didn’t want to miss any gate changes. I also would hate for my mom to come out of the airplane and find nobody waiting for her.

Hesitant About Vacationing with Elderly Parents? Here’s 5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Be!

Did you know that the average life expectancy is about 79 years old?

How old are your parents?

My mom is 74 and as morbid as it sounds, I have asked her to list down about 10-20 things she wants to experience before she gets too old to do anything.  About half the goals on her list included traveling. And as stressful as it is, I’m making it a goal to fulfill it because of the time, she’s just at home, watching TV, or on Facebook.

I get it, traveling with your aging parents may not be the first option that comes to mind when you’re thinking about planning your next vacation, but it’s a must-do experience you and your loved ones definitely won’t regret. Whether you’ve never had the chance to travel with your parents or you’re teetering on deciding if you should take the family trip you’ve been thinking about for years, consider traveling now.

Let’s face it—your parents aren’t getting any younger. Aside from experiencing unforgettable memories with your family, traveling with your parents can raise endorphins, check experiences off their bucket list, strengthen your bond, and more! Here are five reasons why you should make travel plans with them.

1. Keep the Mind Sharp

Staying mentally active is imperative, no matter your age. Most people reach their mental peak in their twenties, but their brain power declines as time passes. Once this happens, information becomes more difficult to learn, and activities become more challenging to perform. The good news? Traveling can spark the minds of your aging parents.

Taking the time to travel to your favorite destinations can benefit your parents’ brain health and memory. Being in a new place heightens their senses and increases their empathy, energy, focus, and attention. Taking that vacation with your parents could be the healthiest thing you and your loved ones do all year!

2. Strengthen Your Bond And Be Known As The Favorite

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we often forget about the times we could be spending with our aging parents. Luckily, traveling together opens the opportunity for reconnecting and understanding each other.

Strengthening the bond with your family helps bridge generational gaps with shared traveling experiences, whether sightseeing, trying new foods, meeting new people, or overcoming the little hiccups accompanying the journey. Each shared experience weaves a tighter bond you and your parents will cherish.

3. Check Off the Bucket List

Is there something you and your parents want to do together? Why wait? As responsibilities shift and more time becomes available to you and your aging parents, a door has opened to bring your list of travel dreams to fruition. Whether visiting a childhood home or exploring ancestral roots, accompanying them as they check items off their bucket list can be an incredibly fulfilling travel experience.

4. Raise Endorphins

Traveling is associated with happiness and excitement; those feelings don’t just come from nowhere. Traveling releases our brain’s endorphins, increasing our mental health. If your aging parents need a boost in morale, booking a vacation may be the perfect remedy.

Getting older can be depressing, but changing scenery and stepping out of their comfort zone may be just what your parents need for their well-being. In addition to this serotonin boost, traveling gives you a chance to practice gratitude for the experiences your parents have had throughout their lives.

5. Learn Life Lessons A.K.A Learn The Family Secrets!

Parents are a reservoir of wisdom and life stories. Listening to their viewpoints and anecdotes can be deeply enlightening, no matter what stage of life you’re in. Travel can catalyze these conversations, providing context and backdrop for lessons your parents can share and imparting knowledge that textbooks and lectures often cannot match. This cross-generational exchange is truly invaluable and can reshape your own perceptions of your life now and in the future.

Traveling with your aging parents is a gift best opened before it’s too late. It’s also a compassionate nod to the cycle of life – celebrating the times past and seizing the moments that lie at your feet. Start traveling now
